AGM of Parish Council (16-5-12)

AGM The picture shows people gathering for last night's Annual Parish Meeting.

Guest speaker, Martin Suthers, described the idea of 'Localism'.

He was followed by Sam Jones who explained the arrangements for the passage of the Olympic Flame through Rushcliffe in June.

This year it was held at the Primary School because the building work at the Old School is not yet complete.

See 100yr-old film of Scott's Arctic Expedition (3-5-12)

Antarctic In September (Tuesday 11th September at 7.30pm) you will be able to see a restored film, first put together in 1924, of Captain Scott's doomed expedition to the South Pole.

It is called 'The Great White Silence' and will be shown at the Old School. Tickets will be £4: more details will be released nearer the time.

It came as a surprise to me to discover that such high quality filming was possible back then. Seeing real life characters, not actors, working together in a such a hostile environment without any of the aids of modern life is very moving—not least because we know the ending. Put the date in your diary now.

Program notes

Antarctic Antarctic A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) led by Captain Scott set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since.

Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife - including the characterful Adélie penguins. Those things he was unable to film he boldly recreated back home. Most importantly, Ponting recorded the preparations for the assault on the Pole - from the trials of the caterpillar track sledges to clothing and cooking equipment - giving us a real sense of the challenges faced by the expedition.

Ponting used his footage in various forms over the years and in 1924 he re-edited it into this remarkable feature, complete with vivid tinting and toning. The BFI National Archive - custodian of the Expedition negatives - has restored the film using the latest photochemical and digital techniques and reintroduced the film's sophisticated use of colour. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and the world of the expedition revealed in brilliant detail.

St George's Day Tea (28-4-12)

With the threat of inclement weather hanging over us on Monday, afternoon tea was had at Rawlings Court instead of on the Pinfold.

Even though a lot fewer people joined us because it was a last minute decision, those who did enjoyed it in comfort and warmth. We are sending a cheque for £52, which was given by way of donations, to the Dove Hospice at Stathern.

I would like therefore, on behalf of the Memorial Hall Committee, to thank everyone who joined us once again.

Bells ring out on St George's Day (25-4-12)

Bell Ringers

In celebration of St George's Day, this team of ringers met on Monday 23rd April at 6pm at St Giles Church, to ring two methods; "a Touch of "Bob Minor, and a Touch of Bobdoubles, plus an infill of call changes. It was an excellent well struck ring for those who may have heard it.

Pictured from Left to right, Geoffrey Yarnall (Tower Captain Langar) Godfrey Allison (Tower Captain Cropwell Bishop), Chris Morris (Saxondale,) Sue Dawson (East Bridgford), Colin Bryan (Cropwell) and Trish Allison (Cropwell).

Anyone interested in the art of campanology, what a"method" or a "touch" may be, or even why"Bob" is often called in the tower, pop down on a Monday evening when the bells are ringing (our practice night) or keep a look out for our tower open day (details still being finalised but will be advertised soon).

The local ringers will be ringing a sponsored quarterpeal at St Giles soon, in order to raise funds towards the church toilet and kitchen facility, please don't be afraid to sign their forms for this much needed church facility.

Here are a few pictures of "the last event" at The Old School Saturday Cafe, before it closes temporarily. This is due to the building of a new kitchen extension and enlargement of the main hall.

We all look forward to its reopening once all the work has been completed in the summer.

Cropwell Bishop Bike Ride Presentation (25-3-12)

Last week, at the Memorial Hall, a presention was made to Air Ambulance.

Following the 'Bike Ride' event last summer, over three thousand pounds was raised by those who took part. A final total of £3690.80 was equally split between the Air Ambulance and Memorial Hall giving £1845.40 to each.

The organising committee thanks everyone who helped make this event a great success:

- the competitors who pushed themselves physically to repeatedly pedal around the road circuit and then had to chase up their sponsors: a big thank you.

- the many marshals who stood for hours on the corners of our local roads: a big thank you.

- and the many 'behind the scene' helpers who helped to keep things going: a big thank you.

Our own 'Sport Relief Mile' (23-3-12)

Over a hundred people—mainly young ones—were on the field at the Memorial Hall this evening running their own mile for Sport Relief. The money they raise through sponsorship will contribute to the National effort that millions enjoyed watching on BBC TV all evening.

Many chose to start their four laps of the field at running pace—and some were still running at the end. The most important result is that everyone finished.

The still, cloudless and mild evening was just perfect for the event and everyone was able to enjoy a hamburger or hot dog at the end through the efforts of the CKOB youth club and their helpers. Well done to everyone involved.

Everyone: do the 'Sports Relief Mile' in Cropwell Bishop! (20-3-12)

Sport Relief

This Friday (23rd March) Cropwell Kids of Bishop (CKOB) are taking part in the Sport Relief Mile on Cropwell Bishop Memorial Hall Park.

They will be there from 6.30pm until 8.30pm—hopefully with members doing the 4 lap walk of the field during the evening.
The Cubs will also be joining in.

There will be hot food, tuck and drinks available and, as the field will be floodlit, there will be some outdoor equipment on site too.

Sport Relief

Organisers are keen to welcome anyone from the village to take part—adults as well as children.

Maybe you have been watching publicity for the event on TV and liked the idea of being a part of this national fun event—but decided it would be too much trouble. Well, now is your chance to take part—without even leaving the village!

Sponsor forms can be downloaded from www.sportrelief.com or ring Jo who has some printed copies (tel: 07891 694541)

It is all for a good cause: will you be there? We do hope so. CKOB leaders, Jo and Lisa, will look out for you.
