It's Cropwell Bishop's By-Election day! (6-12-12)

Election fever .. well not quite, but it does feel like it!

I can't remember the election of a member of the Parish Council creating such a lot of interest.

Before now, I always had the impression that it was difficult getting sufficient number of people to stand for election. Often there were not enough, and an election wasn't necessary. Not this time though.

The vacancy came about when ex-councillor, Peter Walters, left the village. Three people have been nominated it is now our job to pick the one who we think will best fill the post.

I am sure that you have all read the flyers sent out by the candidates (again, a first for the village as far as I am aware) and I understand that many of you cast your vote over a week ago (postal votes). For the rest, tonight is your last chance. Polling at the Old School stays open until 10pm.

After all the effort that has been put in by the candidates, we at least owe them a good turn-out.

I hope to be able to post the result of the election later this evening, but probably not before 11pm. Will it be Janet, Chris or Jo? Log on later to find out.

Coping with the floods (26-11-12)

Here in Cropwell Bishop, we have avoided the worst of the flooding caused by recent downpours. Elsewhere nearby, several villages have been badly affected and Rushcliffe BC has been providing both support and sandbags to dozens of affected residents.

For more details of the areas affected and, more importantly, what to do if ever you are affected, download the pdf: Flooding problems

Arrival of Christmas tree on the Pinfold? (25-11-12)

Pinfold pole Pinfold pole

Just look at the picture on the right: it was taken by Mel Stanley today.
Are the men unloading a giant Christmas Tree for the Pinfold?
What a wonderful, daring idea—what a surprise the schoolchildren will get tomorrow morning!
Maybe next weekend it will be decorated with hundreds of twinkling coloured lights!

Oh dear, the second photo tells a different story.
The men were not unloading from the lorry but loading onto it. And the pole was not a fresh tree trunk but a very old one that had been standing on the Pinfold for decades.

It used to support electricity cables that spread out to several nearby houses.

Earlier this year, new underground electricity cables were laid to the houses. It then became a matter of time before the day arrived when the old pole—and its wires—would be removed.
That day arrived today.

Does "IneedBroadband" deliver? Read on .. (11-11-12)

In the summer, an alernative way of getting broadband in Cropwell Bishop was launched. There were banners for "ineedbroadband.co.uk" around the village and I published the experiences of one person who had signed up with the company.

I have now have news of another person, on Kendal Road, who has now been using the service for six months.

If you are dissatisfied with the broadband service you are getting from BT, why not find out if this really is a reliable way getting iPlayer into your home and downloading big software updates in a matter of minutes or hours rather than days or not at all.

He has published his experience in detail on a blog. Rather than duplicate it here, just click on the link below:
