Record entry for Cropwell Bishop Show (1-9-13)

Show 2012 Entries for this year's Village Show are up 50% on last year. Over 50 people have entered and there will be more than 200 exhibits.

SInce the first Village Show two years ago, it has grown from being mainly a Horticultural Show to one with ten different classes including crafts, photography, cooking and ones for both young and older children.

Show 2012 Because some people have just returned from holiday, we are accepting late entries for another couple of days.

Show 2012 Even if you haven't put in an entry, you can still enjoy all the atmosphere of a Village Show by coming along to the Old School next Saturday (7th Sept) at 2pm when all exhibits and winner certificates will be on display: entry is free.

While there you can buy yourself a cup of tea and a scone and then, at 4pm, you can grab a bargain at the auction of most of the produce and cakes.

All this within walking distance of your home: what more could you ask for?

Roving Bridge Photo Found (29-8-13)

Many thanks to Anne Terzza who turned up a photo, reproduced below, of our Roving Bridge (see news article on 25/8/13).

Looking towards Cropwell Bishop, on the right are the factory buildings that still stand and beyond is the rare Roving Bridge.

It clearly crossed the canal at 90 degrees and that means the road leaving Cropwell Bishop would have had to sweep to the left before going over the bridge. Next time you go this way, look for the 'waste land' to the left which is where that road would have been. I am now waiting to see if any other photos of the bridge turn up.

Another great event at The Wheatsheaf, "GlastonBishop", which raised funds for Cancer reasearch. Lots of bands including Freddie our home grown band.

A Magician and bouncy castle for the children and a fine day; lots of fun for all.

Our Mystery Bridge (25-8-13)

Roving Bridge The bridge in this picture is on the Macclesfield Canal and it has a connection with Cropwell Bishop.

It is an unusual sort of bridge. It is called a Roving Bridge—sometimes known as a Turnover Bridge, and was popular on canals whose narrow boats were pulled by horses.

If, at the site of a bridge, the tow path changed from one side of the canal to the other, you obviously had to take your horse onto the other side.

No problem, you might say, you just had to lead it over the bridge to the other path. But, on a normal bridge, you had to unhitch your horse from the boat, push your boat under the bridge somehow, and then hitch up your horse on the other side.

All this takes time and effort but 18th century canal engineers invented a clever solution: the Roving Bridge.

Look at the way the tow path on the right leads up over the bridge and then curves down onto the other side of the canal before continuing along. Your horse could follow the path onto the other side without his tow-rope ever getting tangled. The canal boat didin't even have to stop. Simple and effective.

Now, the connection with our village: there used to be a Roving Bridge like this in Cropwell Bishop. It was the only one of it's type on the Grantham Canal and was where the Kinoulton Road goes over the canal near the Canalside industrial park—where the old gypsum factory stands.

The sad thing is that no one appears to have a photograph of it: not even the Grantham Canal Society.

Do you remember seeing the bridge before it was demolished? Have you ever seen a photo of it? Do you possibly have a photo of it?

If you can help, please contact me.

Thanks

Village Ventures (22-8-13)

Kel Elliott Here in Cropwell Bishop, following an application by the Entertainments Committee and the Parish Council, we have been lucky enough to secure 3 diverse and diverting acts through the Village Ventures scheme.

Each of these acts will perform at the Old School, Cropwell Bishop and the first will be Kel Elliott and her Band on the 11th October. The four piece combo delivers an upbeat jazzy sound featuring Kel herself on feisty double bass and sassy vocals, accompanied by guitar, keyboards and percussion. Check the band out at www.kelelliott.com.

Kel’s music is described as “lyrically optimistic and musically infectious” – so if you would like to catch her, tickets will be in the Cabin, Cropwell Bishop, from 1st September.

Tickets, priced at a bargain £12 thanks to the subsidy of the Village Ventures scheme, will include a welcome drink and light antipasti. Timing 7.30pm for drinks with an 8.00pm start. Seating will be cabaret style, maximum 8 to a table, so why not get a group of you together? Village Ventures acts attract audiences from far and wide and our capacity is limited - be sure to buy early!

You can pre-order tickets and reserve full tables through the Parish Clerk, Cropwell Bishop Janice Towndrow - 0115 989 4656 or clerk@cropwellbishop-pc.gov.uk
