St Giles: out of bounds over Christmas! (13-1-14) Church

As you may already know, St Giles Church was closed to the public a few days before Christmas, and Christmas services had to be relocated.
The Rector and PCC of St Giles are most grateful to The Parish Council for the use of the Old School for the Crib Service, to the Primary School for the use of their Hall for the Carol Service, and to the Methodist Church for the use of their premises for the Christmas morning Communion Service.
In difficult times, the willing and timely response of all these village organizations has been a great support and encouragement, and thanks to them we were able to welcome nearly three hundred people to Christmas services in one location or another.

Background to repair needs

Problems with the building had already been identified some time ago, and a Repairs Project, in collaboration with English Heritage, is in hand. Plans have been approved for an upgrade/correction of drainage systems and some specific masonry repairs.
However, recently there was a fall of plaster. Further investigations by the structural engineer, architect and builder already engaged on the repairs project have pointed to more serious problems with the arch between the nave and the chancel—hence the temporary closure of St Giles Church.

Limited opening now possible Church

Structural support and propping has now been put in place to make the building safe until repairs can be carried out.
Following this, the engineer has declared that the building is safe to use and that we may open St Giles Church for specific purposes with a responsible person in attendance.
On this basis, Morning Prayer is offered again on Monday and Friday mornings at 8am, and we will be resuming Sunday Worship from 9th February.
The church will be locked at other times, and for this we apologise to the many people who value the chance to pop in for prayer or contemplation when they pass by.

Cost and fundraising implications

Church We worked hard last year, with great support from the village, to raise more than the target we had been set by English Heritage. However, quotations for the work are significantly higher than were projected, and we are yet to hear from English Heritage in response to our request for enhanced funding from them to meet the difference.
The additional work now recognised as being necessary is over and above the scheme already approved by English Heritage, and specifications and costings have yet to be finalised. When we know what the task is in front of us, we will again set-to with an appeal, events and seeking further grants.

Event in the pipeline

We are delighted that Elaine Robinson and Mel Stanley, who established ‘Fern Charity Enterprises’ in 2013, have already offered to organise an event to contribute to Church funds. They have in mind a 'home-grown' variety show to appeal to all tastes and ages in the village which is likely to take place in November 2014.

Our own Christmas Light Show (20-12-13)

Xmas Lights Once again, many people in Cropwell Bishop have made an effort to decorate the front of their homes with bright Christmas lights. As in previous years, there are some 'hot spots' where, for a moment, you can imagine yourself in Oxford Street (almost!).

If you want to see the most spectacular shows for the least amount of effort (useful if you are taking young children round on a cold blustery night) then I suggest you include the following places on your tour:

- the whole of Hall Drive (in particular, half-way down where you are surrounded by bright lights. Once again, Ian Smith has put on a spectacular show, well supported by his neighbours)

- Kendal Road (opposite the end of Hall Drive)

- St Giles Way (half-way down)

- Hoe View Road (the bottom end, where the green is. Also, further up the road on the left, towards the top corner)

- Parkin Close (half-way down)

- Springfield Close (where many trees sparkle with strings of lights)

And try to include the area around the Church and Jubilee Garden too.
You will see lots of others on your way between these places. If you think I have missed some good displays, send me an email and I will go and take pictures to add to these.

Christmas Eve Church Services: change of venue (20-12-13)

Church I have been informed that St Giles Church has suffered some damage and so is unable to be used for two Christmas Eve Services. They will still take place, but elsewhere: here are the details:

The 'Children's Crib Service' at 3.30pm will now be at the Old School.

'Carols by Candle Light' at 6pm will now be at Cropwell Bishop Primary School.

Bridge Club celebrates (20-12-13)

Bridge Club Xmas Party The Cropwell Bishop Bridge Club held its Christmas celebration at The Old School, Fern Road, Cropwell Bishop on Tuesday 17 December. An enjoyable and, at times, chaotic bridge drive was followed by drinks and a buffet.

The Club meets throughout the year at 7.15pm on a Tuesday night at the Old School, Fern Road.

New members, whether beginners or more experienced players, are always welcome. Prospective members can come along individually or as a pair.

If you are interested, please contact Ken Davis (email: davisfamily@btinternet.com) or come along to one of our meetings.

Enjoy a Film (23-11-13)

Blue Jasmine This new film has had rave reviews and been given top ratings; don't miss the chance to see it at your own village cinema without having to venture into Nottingham.

Avoid the car parking fee, high cost of a seat, journey time and the possibility of bad weather (it is winter) by buying yourself a ticket from the Cabin.

This film could well be a sell-out, just as a couple of others were in 2013.

With the guarantee of a really comfortable seat, warm room, drinks at the interval and a friendly inviting atmosphere, why would you not want to go?

See you there then?

'Great Expectations' brought to life (13-12-13)

Great Expectaations

Have you ever read a long book and, by the time you reached the end weeks later, struggled to recall earlier characters and incidents that ultimately have great significance?

Well, there was no chance of that at this evening's live performance at the Old School. Around 80 people were engrossed in the dynamic reading-act of David Mynne as he brought to life the characters of Great Expectations.

During his lifetime, Charles Dickens achieved great fame not only as a writer, but also as a story teller. He embarked on great tours of Britain and America reading his stories to big audiences. This evening, David Mynne enabled us to experience the same drama and emotion that those 19th Century audiences raved about.

The mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies added to the warm experience.

Parnell Phill Night (30-11-13)

Thank you to all of you who came to the Parnell Phil Night. We have received some excellent feedback from people enjoying the evening, for example:

'such gifted musicianship'
'that EWI, what an incredible, haunting, sound, I've never seen or heard it before'
'what a beautiful voice, a real voice'
'I felt I had been transported to a scene in Pride & Prejudice with the harpsichord'.

It seems that you've given Cropwell Bishop Stilton, Calem port, Melton Mowbray hand-crafted pork pie, Mrs Pugh's Preserves and the trifle, the thumbs up too, great!

We are now pleased to announce that, thanks to your generosity and support, a donation is on its way to the Grantham Canal Society for £342.89. Brilliant.

Thank you very much.

Best wishes

Elaine & Mel

Money raised for good causes (26-11-13)

The Parish Council wish to thank the Memorial Hall members who raised £132.31 selling hot dogs and supplying free mushy peas and soup at its Bonfire Night on the 1st November.
A cheque for £135 has been sent to an excellent cause, Dove Hospice.
Thanks again to all the team from the Memorial Hall who gave up their time for us on this evening.

Other thanks go to everyone who came and enjoyed Populaire, our fun, frothy, French film shown on Children in Need night.
Your generosity raised £70 for this very worthy cause, serving some special French drinks on the night.

Langar Tip—update (25-11-13)

Almost 500 people have now signed the petition to keep the Langar Recycling Site open. Have you added your name? (See the news article lower down this page)

If we don't win this battle it will cost us all dearly in time and fuel costs, whilst travelling all the way to a "super tip" at West Bridgford—and just imagine the queues!

No doubt, some people will avoid these problems and dump their rubbish on road-side verges and in the Canal. Add your name to the protest and make the councillors think again.

You too could ring the bells (25-11-13)

Parcels from the Cabin

Do you start fuming when you arrive home to find that the postman has been unable to deliver a parcel?

Unlike the 'old days' when you could pop into the village to collect it, you now have to go all the way to Bingham!

To get there costs money and time, and if you are working or have young children, it becomes a massive inconvenience. If you don't have a car, it becomes an almost impossible task.

Well, relax, there is now a better way—just like the 'old days'.

Just look what The Cabin has arranged ....

Arrange for your parcel to be delivered to:

   THE CABIN,
   11 Church Street,
   Cropwell Bishop,
   Nottingham
   NG12 3BY

(Please make sure you put on YOUR full name)

When your parcel arrives you can collect it from:
   05.30 to 18.00   Monday — Saturday
   06.00 to 12.00   Sunday

Let us know your mobile number in advance and we will even text you to let you know it has arrived.

And, of course, I presume this service can be used for the delivery of parcels by other delivery companies too. However, I don't image it applies to the delivery of washing machines etc!

Now, hasn't that lifted your spirits this grey day?

West Bridgford Cash Machines: Update (23-11-13)

This evening, our local Police sent out the following warning:

"There have been a number of fraud devices found on cash machines in the Central Ave, West Bridgford area over the last few weeks, all with similar mechanisms.

Cash Machine The offenders place a strip over the front of the machine where you enter your card; this often contains a camera to record your... pin number.
Please have a close look at the cash machine before entering your card and check that the plastic panel is fixed securely to the machine. This panel will look very similar to the normal cash machine front panel and may be made from metal or plastic.

When using the machine cover the key pad with your hand to stop your pin number being recorded or seen by anyone nearby.

If you have any suspicions when using the machine please call the police immediately on 101 or in an emergency call 999.

Sent on behalf of
PC 946 Mark Hallam"

Would you be happy to see it go? (22-11-13)

Langar Recycling Site

I imagine that every car-owner in Cropwell Bishop, has visited Langar Tip (sorry, 'Langar Waste Recycling Site'). I have been there over 40 times this year alone (we moved house). Can you imagine what you would do without it?

Well, you had better start 'imagining', because Notts County Council is proposing to close it!

If you are not in favour, sign a petition objecting to its closure. Even though the petition has been online for only a day, you will probably see that some of your colleagues have already added their name. You don't need to leave your seat, you can do it all online.

Don't wait unti it is too late, add your name today: don't leave it to 'others'.

Click on this link to add your name: Keep Langar Tip Open!
