Picnic in the Park: one to remember (5-7-15)

A warm, still, evening with a clear sunny sky, what better than to fill it with music, dancing, fun and fireworks. A real family event with hundreds of people enjoying a great village get-together.

Over the past 15 years, Picnic in the Park has grown in popularity. The basic format remains unchanged but its organisation and the variety and quality of entertainers has continually improved. Obviously, the weather plays a big part in making the night a success: I am not alone in remembering one year, sitting in my car on the field, with windscreen wipers working furiously in the epouring rain, dutifully waiting for the fireworks to start!

But surely there has never been a better Show than last night. Well done and thanks to Jan Towndrow and Peter Walters for organising it, and also to the many, many people who have devoted time and effort to make the whole of the Celebration Weekend a success. And thanks to our Parish Council and the many local businesses who supported the events.

Browse through these photos and enjoy the atmosphere of the night.

Mystery Ring Over Village (24-7-15)

Cropwell Smoke Ring Did you see the giant 'smoke ring' hovering over Cropwell Bishop at about 8.30pm yesterday evening? (see right)

A lot of people were out staring at it and taking photographs. Apparently such rings are not that unusual. Below is a picture of one that appeared over Warwick last year. It was caused by the smoke from new pyrotechnics being used as part of the attractions at Warwick Castle. Warwick Smoke Ring

However, the cause of last night's ring was far more distressing: a big fire at the industrial estate on Hollygate Lane in Cotgrave.

Reports tell of sixty firefighters tackling the blaze which began shortly before 8pm.

Nearby residents said they heard a bang and then saw a large cloud and smoke ring over the area.

To the best of my knowledge, no one was hurt in the blast.

The fire service said the cause of the blaze was being investigated, but it did involve gas cylinders.

Down Lincoln Cathederal .. (23-7-15)

Hello fellow villagers!

On Saturday August 8th, I am descending a 98 foot rope in Lincoln Cathedral to launch the 'E.N.T. Garden Appeal': fundraising to create a hospital garden for patients at QMC.

Excited and also slightly unnerved by the news that our team will be one of the first ever to undertake this (and did I mention I'm not so keen on heights?!) I'd be hugely grateful for all your support.

The garden will be a welcoming, healing space for patients during visits to the QMC - we aim to start planting in Spring next year. To find out more about how you can support the 'ENT Garden Danglers', please go to:

Many thanks to all!

Heritage Group: a New Member's View (9-7-15)

Having moved to Cropwell Bishop from East Yorkshire in March this year, my wife and I have recently become members of the Heritage Group. We are no strangers to the work of the Heritage Group since we have travelled down from East Yorkshire on a number of occasions to attend the regular talks and meetings which the Heritage group organise.

On the Saturday of Celebration weekend I went along to witness the opening of recently restored Parish room and to view the display which had been set up .

After the tape- cutting ceremony, performed by Rev. Bronwen Gamble, the assembled visitors were able to go inside to see the results of the work which had been put in by Heritage Group Committee members and other volunteers. Among the visitors was the previous incumbent at St. Giles, the Rev. Andrew Wigram, accompanied by his wife Catherine. I was also told that Rev. Wigram had been instrumental in the re-establishment of the current Heritage Group in 2002, with the help of some of the members of the original 1970`s group.

Although the Parish  room appears relatively small from the outside, the restoration work has made good use of the interior, which is spacious and light.  The Secretary, Ann Mansell, told me that the room could comfortably accommodate 20 people for meetings, talks, etc.

The exhibition which had been put on by the Heritage Group had much to hold the visitors` interest, and a number of the Committee members were on hand to answer  questions and provide more information on the rich heritage of the village. Of particular interest was the extensive display of the school photographs from the earliest days right up to the present, and I watched as many of the visitors of all ages  examined these photographs to look for themselves and their former school friends.

Overall, there was plenty on the displays to interest everyone, but at the same time such an exhibition could only show a small selection of the huge volume of recorded and oral history.  Cropwell Bishop is an ancient village with a heritage which has accumulated over the centuries.  The Heritage Group continues to work hard to research and record all the aspect of this heritage for the benefit of today`s villagers and those that follow. Now that I can count myself in those numbers, I would certainly hope to contribute to this valuable work.

The Cabin: still very much Alive! (13-6-15)

Cabin As I am sure you are aware, The Cabin building no longer exists in the Cropwell Bishop—but, as a business, it is still very much alive serving its many newspaper customers.

For months, a cloud of uncertainty has hung over the site of the The Cabin and, indeed, all surrounding buildings and land. It would appear that the whole area is due to be developed but, in what way, only time will show.

Many villagers feared that this would inevitably result in the loss of their morning paper delivery but, thanks to Mark and Chantelle’s enterprise, it is safe. Mark is making deliveries himself and, indeed, many customers are getting their paper even earlier than before.

Cabin However, because The Cabin’s business now operates from outside of the Village, it does mean that ways of communicating and paying will have to change.

The early morning walk to pick up your paper at The Cabin and have a chat is now history, but you will still be able to change your order, cancel papers when on holiday and pay your bills—but in different ways.

You can phone The Cabin on: 07968 612490.

You can email The Cabin at: TheCabinDelivery@gmail.com

And you can pay your bill over the internet using BACS (Bankers’ Automated Clearing Services). Here are the details you need for doing this:

— Co-operative Bank
— Sort code: 08-90-74
— Account number: 70716175

If you are unfamiliar with using the internet, don't fear; you will still be able to communicate by leaving messages on your door. As Chantelle says, “whatever works for you,” will be okay.

It will take time for us all to get used to these new ways of working but, remember, we still have a reliable paper delivery service and, in time, some may actually find this way of operating more convenient.

Parish Room Opens (4-7-15)

After 13 years of great effort by a small team of volunteers led by Ann Mansell, the Parish Room (opposite the old Cabin shop) was officially opened by the Reverend Bronwen Gamble today.

For those volunteers it was a moment of great pride to see the building usable again after decades of neglect. For some visitors it was a moment of surprise. For all, seeing the photographs and displays brought back memories and, for some, encouraged moments of reflection.

When you visit, don't miss the names that children scratched on one of the windows—during an idle moment(?)—and the date: 1851.
