A Right Royal Reception (29-4-11)

Bunting and Bucks fizz, sizzling sausage sandwiches, Mrs Pugh's perfect pickle, young families, elder citizens and the friendly folk of Cropwell Bishop united in the Old School to celebrate the Royal Wedding, 21st century style.

All enjoyed thanks to the hard work and dedication of Caroline, Peter, Judith, Steve, Jane, Tim, Sue and Lance, volunteer members of the Parish Entertainments Committee.

Festivities appropriately paused for the service as we joined in the hymn singing with flags waving to Jerusalem, an excellent event celebrating a wonderful occasion on a happy April day.

The Royal Wedding (28-4-11)

Wedding party It is not every day there is a Royal Wedding so why not make the most of it?

Maybe you already have your own plans for the day, but if not and you want to enjoy the event with others, why not pop down to the Old School?

As you can see from the poster on the right (thanks to Sue Rickells) there are lots of good reasons for going.

The weather forecast looks good so it should be a day to enjoy and remember.

I know that some people are having their own Street Party. Pictures below show preparations for the Street Party on Hall Drive in 1977 (for the Queen's Silver Jubilee).

Organised by Hilary Jarrow (in red and white striped jumper) and neighbour Elaine on the right. And before you ask, no, we don't still have the bunting—although we might still have the pasting table supporting the home made food!

Skate Ramp damaged by fire (27-4-11)

It has been reported that the skate ramp on the Memorial Hall field has been damaged by fire. It appears to have been caused by 'drunken young people' over the weekend.

The Parish Council has requested extra policing of the site.

It is contacting the builders who, hopefully, will be able to repair the damage.

Cycling softly (26-4-11)

Here in Cropwell Bishop we have cycle 10 mile time trials taking place every Thursday during the summer and in June we will once again have the 24 hour Bike Ride.

However, if all of this sounds too energetic and you prefer gently pedalling your bike along quiet country lanes and canal tow paths in nice weather, then why not do it in the company of other like minded people in the village?

First, we need to know how many people would be interested in the idea. Elaine Robinson is prepared to help with this: send her an email at elaine.robinson@ntu.ac.uk and she will take if from there.

St George's Day (23-4-11)

St George's Day on the Pinfold Once again, the Memorial Hall Committee were out on the Pinfold this morning helping villagers to enjoy St George's Day.

I doubt there has been a hotter one in living memory! Saying that, I am sure to there is someone out there ready to correct me.

Anyway, it was a lovely day and it was nice to see the gazebo being used for shade rather than shelter.

Did you manage to get there and join in the fun?

Cropwell Feast was here (15-4-11)

Old Cropwell Feast The Cropwell Feast was last held in Cropwell Bishop over 50 years ago. This photo of it was taken at some date before then. Can you recognise where it was taken from?

Look at the houses in the background. You must have walked past them, maybe you live in one! They stand at the bottom of Mill Lane.

Now look at the photo below. I took it today standing on the steps of 3 Nottingham Road.

Old Cropwell Feast Look carefully and you can just make out the chimnies of the same houses in the same position behind the trees. The old photo may well have been taken from an upstairs window of 3 Nottingham Road. I wonder what year that was.

Rest assured that the new version of the Cropwell Feast that is to be held on Saturday 17th September 2011 will not be held on the same spot! Exactly where it will take place and what will happen will be revealed in the coming months. Will we see old fairground rides like these?

Many thanks to John Watson of Cropwell Biashop for the loan of old photos which were used to construct the first picture.

Sport gets its own tab (11-4-11)

Football, cricket, cycling—a lot of people in Cropwell Bishop are actively involved in sport and many others enjoy watching events.

With this in mind, I have decided to add an extra tab to the website menu. Look at the right-hand end, just before "Diary", and you will see the new "Sport" tab. From now on that is where sporting news items will appear.

And the first one is already there. Click on the tab and take a look. There will be more in the next day or two.
