Not to be missed (9-9-11)

Feast Day 'Friends of the School' give great support to our village Primary School and they are now planning to organise fun sporting events on Cropwell Feast Day.

These will take place on the Memorial Hall Field in the afternoon.

They are hoping to put on a Sack Race, Wheelbarrow Race (adult holding a child's legs), 3-legged race and Spacehopper race.

Space Hopper And while these are taking place, there are plans to have a 'Welly Wanging' competition for both adults and children.

Have a look around your garage for that old spacehopper—it may be needed if the Friends can't find the ones they bounced on in their younger days!

Have you entered? (7-9-11)

Feast Day Feast Day is now just 10 days away and scores of villagers are working hard to ensure that the weekend is a great success.

Programmes are on sale in the shops and tickets for the 'Frog Race' (don't ask!) are on sale at the Post Office: they are going fast so hop down there quick if you want one.

This weekend is the deadline for handing in your entry for the Horticultural Show. Remember, it is not just vegetables: there are also categories for fruit, flowers, cookery and photography—plus several for children to enter.

Full details and an entry form can be downloaded by clicking on the Allotment tab above. See the first article and the 'Downloads' section on the right-side.
Alternatively, pick up an entry form from the Post Office, Coop or Barlows.

Remember, it is taking part in the very first village Show that matters, not winning.

Folk and Country Event (18-8-11)

The Charity Folk and Country night in the Old School last Saturday was a very successful evening.

Tickets sold out, the hall was packed, the bar was very busy and the BBQ went down a treat—thank you to everyone who came.

Incredible—but, sadly, true (5-8-11)

Church roof St Giles' church has just suffered its third lead theft in the last 12 months. This time, instead of the porch roof, lead has been taken from the main nave roof.....leaving daylight (and rain!) filtering through. The north aisle roof has also been damaged.

Whatever your feelings about churches and religion there is no doubt that this type of theft hurts the whole village. St Giles', a Grade 1 listed building, is an iconic centrepiece at the heart of Cropwell Bishop and dear to the hearts of so many.

We are desperate to raise funds for a toilet and kitchen facility within St Giles, but instead we have to spend what little we have in repairs and replacement of lead due to theft and vandalism.

Church roof We ask all villagers please to be vigilant and report anything suspicious happening in and around St Giles' churchyard to the police. Or maybe you saw something this week (probably on Wednesday night August 3rd) and can provide helpful information?

Ironically our village church is right in the centre of the village, but is still not really overlooked. But please take a look each time you go past and report anything untoward that you see. We would be very grateful for your help.

Thanks and regards,

Tim Travis

Lost—has it been found? (29-7-11)

Last Wednesday, a Game Case was lost somewhere between Stockwell Lane and the Chequers Pub car park: has anybody found it?

It has two double-sided pages that hold 6 games each side.
The front page has Zelda Orcana of Time 3D, Lego pirates of the Caribbean 3D, Rayman 3D, an SD card, Dragon Quest, and Sonic Classic collection. Also has a pack of AR cards.
If found please call: 0115-989-2069

Horticultural Show (16-7-11)

The Cropwell Feast will be on Saturday 17th September—so will the Village's first Horticultural Show. Be part of it by submitting an entry.

Entry forms will be published shortly but in the meantime take a look at the range of different categories in the Show. You will be able to enter as many as you want.

Look in your garden or allotment and keep an eye on what is growing well. You will not have to submit your entry form until a week before the event so you have two months to pick out the ones you want to show. This is our own Village Show so being part of it is what really matters—not winning.

Similarly, think about flowers, cakes, eggs and jams. Don't forget to have your camera ready for that great photgraph and keep in mind the category for children.

More news soon.

Primary School strengthens links with Japan (11-7-11)

Cropwell Bishop Primary School Cropwell Bishop Primary School, have a link with a school in Japan – Komaki Elementary School, Nagano, Japan. Each year children from Komaki school and their teachers visit the school and community and on alternate years Phil Palmer, the Head Teacher, and children of Cropwell Bishop Primary visit Komaki in Nagano – the place where the winter Olympics of 1998 were held.

The exchange programme provides real experience of life in each other's countries and cultures. We stay in each other's homes and work on projects involving the curriculum and the community. Contact is made through email, letters and video conferencing which is supported by the Japan Society, but it is the exchange programme that is really special.

Cropwell Bishop Primary School Over the last 7 years, strong bonds between the children and their families and the teaching staff have led to great friendships being made and many families are still in contact with each other and sometimes visit. The children have spent a great deal of time researching into each other's countries and areas and finding similarities and differences that we can celebrate. One similarity was a love of sport, and although baseball is the major sport in Japan, football is growing with a few players now playing in English teams.

A major element of the exchange programme is the link with the community. The Japanese Head Teacher was very impressed with our link with the Parish Council, especially that the Chair and Vice Chair are on the school council and that our school children have a voice in the village. This is something they are hoping to put in place when they return to Japan so that the children of the community can invest in their own future and have ownership in the community in which they are growing up in and in which they live.

The Japanese children and teachers were also fascinated by a tour of the City Ground and enjoyed being honoured guests at the flag raising ceremony at County Hall for the forces day..

The world is indeed a small place and getting smaller!
