Cycle racing every week in the village (22-4-10)

Take cycle racing. The 24 hour Bike Ride that takes place in the summer every couple of years is well reported, but did you know that for years there have been weekly races taking place during the summer months?

The Nottingham Clarion Cycling Club organise 10 mile time trials on Thursday evenings throughout the summer months: they have already had three and last night I went along to watch the event.

Five cyclists from the village were among the thirty odd riders at the start: Mike Campbell, Gary Smith, Paul Matthews, Jonathan Webb and Greg McCullum.

I was a little surprised at the way all the cyclists totally occupied the car park at the Lime Kiln Pub but then I discovered that they give the pub their good custom after the event!

Starting at minute intervals just across the road from the Lime Kiln, the cyclists head towards Colston Bassett and then on to Harby where they turn left to Langar and then back to Cropwell Bishop. The finish is at the village sign on Fern Road.

I think even the organisers are surprised by the increasing number of starters this year. You do have to be a member of a cycling club to race (for insurance reasons) but you can join the Clarion for just £10 and then pay £2.50 for each race. Maybe the surge in interest is connected with the fantastic success of British Cyclists at the Olympics and World Championships.

In the world of cycling, everyone wants to beat British Cyclists – especially those from arch rival Australia. In this year’s Tour de France there is a British team led by Bradley Wiggins who hopes to be in the top 3 by the end.

Thursday evenings then, look out for racing cyclists. Those taking on a new allotment on Fern Road next week will have a good view of the finish – but be very careful as you join the road on leaving: look right for cyclists approaching at great speed.
