Wow! Look what our kids have done! (28-3-10)

Skate Park Graffiti Click on the Youth page to see what a group of village children achieved yesterday.

You may have already seen yesterday's pictures of them at work (also on the Youth page) but now you can see the full glory of their efforts.

Reading the papers and watching TV, you might be forgiven for thinking that nobody ever does anything these days unless they are paid.

Well that's not true in Cropwell Bishop, as these children have showed. Whilst they didn't get a penny for their efforts, they have earned a lot of admiration for what they have achieved and they will be rewarded with a great deal of satisfaction for their great art. Well done.

Now click on the Youth page.

Busy as usual (27-3-10)

Saturday Cafe 27-3-10 Saturday Cafe 27-3-10 With displays from 'Mags Bags', 'Becca's Bakes' and Pheonix Cards, we thought it would be busy at the Saturday Cafe in the Old School today, and it was.

There was a feeling of Spring in the air. The daffodils are now coming out and no doubt, after we put our clocks forward an hour tonight, winter will become a fading memory as the evenings stretch out.

People were catching up on the local news as they nibbled cake and supped tea. Even our local policeman popped in for visit.

Were you there this morning? If not, you can at least enjoy the photos - thanks to Mel who took them.

Val Bellamy (20-3-10)

Tree Planting for Val Bellamy Tree Planting for Val Bellamy Those of you who have lived here over 20 years, will remember the ‘Mace Shop’ that used to be opposite the Post Office. It was in the white house that still stands there and those ground floor windows once had displays of food.

Tree Planting for Val Bellamy The Mace was run by Val and Wilf Bellamy. They lived in the house itself and when they retired and closed the shop, they continued to live there.

Sadly, Val recently died but Wilf still lives there and can often be seen walking to the shops – albeit slowly with his walking frame.

Val was one of the founding members of the village Gardening Club and its committee wanted to commemorate Val’s life in some suitable way. The Club has worked hard to make the Pinfold a pleasant place to be and it was decided that Val would have appreciated the planting of a tree there in her memory.

This morning that tree was planted: a Mountain Ash. People who knew Val were present as Glyn Greenwood reflected on Val’s interest in plants and gardening and then Wilf, and other family members, formally planted the young tree.

Allotment Site Allotment field What are these people doing early on a Saturday morning when they could be relaxing at home instead of getting wet? Alan Wilson, Chairman of the Parish Council, was there too. What was going on?

It’s a sell out! (19-3-10)

Cropwell Cinema Not so long ago you could turn up at Cropwell Cinema and buy your ticket at the door: those days may now be a thing of the past.

At tonight’s showing of ‘Julie and Julia’ the Old School was packed. There were over 60 people there to watch this new film. It had no murders, fights, and virtually no 4-letter words yet provided an enjoyable couple of hours of entertainment. The bar also supplied additional pleasure.

Check the Diary Page on this website for details of the next two films – one of them aimed at children. Get your tickets from the Post Office and, if you don't want to be disappointed, do so as soon as possible.

Tell the Village about yourself! (19-3-10)

1983 playgroup 1986 School Float 1987 David Bellamy 1989 Play Group Are you involved with running an organisation in Cropwell Bishop or do you run a business here? If so, then here is an opportunity to tell everyone – including newcomers, all about yourself.

Cropwell Bishop Parish Council is currently preparing a booklet about Cropwell Bishop for every household - and also for new residents who move into the village.

To do this, it needs information about shops, services, businesses, organisations, clubs and societies based in the village. Councillor Hilary Hawkins is organising its collection. All the shops, services, businesses, organisations, clubs and societies based in the village are welcome to add their details to the booklet.

To ensure a full description, Hilary needs you to supply the following information:

  • Organisation name
  • Contact name
  • Contact address
  • Telephone number
  • Email address
  • Website address
  • A short description of the services provided, aims of organisation, goods sold etc. Please limit this to 30 words max

Please deliver the information to the Parish Council collection-box in the Post Office. Alternatively, deliver it to the Parish Council Office at The Old School, or email it to hilary.hawkins@cropwellbishop-pc.gov.uk or clerk@cropwellbishop-pc.gov.uk

Please provide the information by Monday 19th April 2010.

If you need more information about the project, please ring Hilary Hawkins on 989-9243.

These pictures show some of the organised events that took place in Cropwell Bishop in the 1980s. Many of the people in them still live in the village but they may have changed a bit over the years! Keep a look out for them on your travels.

Many thanks to past resident, Pat Onions, who supplied the pictures.

The greenest homes in the village? (14-3-10)

Low-Cost Houses The new low-cost houses look well on the way to being completed. They have been built to the highest environmental standards and their energy consumption should be low. Are those solar panels on the south-facing roof?

Just look at the picture below. On the left, in the distance, you can clearly see the cement-works at Barnstone.

On the horizon you can see the woods that stretch to Belovoir Castle - just out of view on the left.

View of Plungar The village stretching along the foot of the woods is Plungar. I never imagined that you could see Plungar from Cropwell Bishop. I suppose 200 years ago our village forefathers would have been much more knowledgeable about local views, after all, many people probably spent almost every day of their life within site of St Giles.

Maybe farm labourers working the land near Hoe Hill, talked of making the journey to Plungar: maybe some, now in St Giles graveyard, never did.
