Crowds at coffee morning (31-10-09)

invite Mayor I thought we wouldn't be able to find an empty seat, then we spotted two, but before we could reach them we found ourselves talking to Ann, then Carola, then Howard, then Alan, then the Mayor of Rushcliffe, then ...

That's how coffee mornings at the Old School seem to go. Everyone is there and you spend all your time trying to catch up on all the news and catch hold of people you wanted to speak to.

Today you could buy things from the stands set up by the Heritage Group, WI and Pheonix Cards. Thankfully there was an endless supply of drinks and cakes from the hard working girls in the kitchen.

If you haven't yet been to a coffee morning, make an effort to go to the last one before Chistmas. It will be on Saturday 28th November at 10am til noon. See you there.

Don't miss out on village events (28-10-09)

fireworks Damned United There is a lot happening in the village over the next few weeks: make sure you don't miss out.

This coming Saturday it is the monthly coffee morning at the Old School. As well as the usual drinks and cakes, the WI will be promoting their 80th Anniversary Year.

On Friday 6th November there will be the annual Fireworks Extravaganza on the Memorial Hall Field and there will be free food at the start. Before all of this starts, the new Skate Park will be officially opened. It should be quite an evening. See "Diary Page" on this website (or Cropwell Bishop News) for further details.

On Friday 13th November Cropwell Bishop Cinema will be showing the new film, "The Damned United". Anyone over 15 can go, you don't have to be a member or anything - just go and buy your ticket from the Cabin. See "Diary Page" on this website (or Cropwell Bishop News) for further details.

Gardener's do it in rain: it's not all sunshine and flowers! (15-10-09)

In the Rain Fenced in Something happened to the Gardening Club's luck with the weather on today - it rained as they tided up the Old School Garden ready for Spring.

Undeterred the gardeners carried on in the rain and drizzle (rather like the Ground-force crew) and cleared the garden and planted tulips along with other annuals and perennials.

Just watch this space, it will be ablaze with colour next year and well worth getting soaked.

Tree cutting Tea time

W.I.'s 80th Anniversary Party (14-10-09)

Cutting the cake Talk time September was a fun evening when members learnt rubber stamping techniques.

Mrs Brenda Woodward brought a large selection of materials, and demonstrated how a professional card could easily be achieved. The central heating, feverish activity and animated chatter resulted in a warmth that only an early cup of tea could relieve.

A packed house of fashion-conscious ladies from 8 to 80 years appreciated a Fashion Show on the following Friday. Some brought their wine and made it ‘a girl’s night out’, others preferred ‘a nice cuppa’ with a homemade biscuit but all enjoyed it and requested it become an annual event.

October was the 80th anniversary party. Mrs Maureen Ashby, Nottinghamshire Federation Chairman, was our guest of honour. Special guests were past Presidents, including Mrs Maureen Wilkinson whose mother, Mrs Ethel Scott nee Loach, was a founder member. The cake was cut by Miss Jean Robinson, a member for over 60 years. Reminiscences of her early memories of the WI were most interesting.

After the official photographs, courtesy of local photographer Miss Ruth Hall, and excellent buffet there was just room for the rich fruit cake made by Mrs Pat Price and beautifully decorated by Mrs Jenny Eyre before settling back to be entertained by ‘Moonlight & Rosie’.

Our Information and Promotion board will be at the Old School Coffee Morning on 31st October; do look at the photographs and chat to our members. Saturday, November 21st is the Christmas Fair at Rawlings Court (look for the advert elsewhere). At only £1 for admission, with free coffee and homemade mince pies available, and quality produce to buy, it is excellent value.

Our November meeting will be another ‘crafty’ evening. Louisa Gunning will be demonstrating how to cut, dry and press flowers and the competition will be for a Scented Sachet.

What are they building here? (7-10-09)

skate area skate area

Builders, digging up grass to build something - what could it be? This is one of two new building projects that started this week. This one will provide a facility that will be available to anyone - however I would be surprised to see older folk using it.

skate area These builders are making a start on the creation of a Skate Area. It will be sited in the corner of the Memorial Field (see photo right).
It will feature a 24ft double height half pipe and two pieces of equipment replicating street features used by skaters. A bench and bin will also be installed.
If you can't imagine what the finished skate area will look like, just wait until it is finished and go and have a look. I am sure our own village enthusiasts will provide a continual demonstration.
It is good to see this project finally nearing completion. It has taken a great deal of effort by villagers and the Parish Council to make this happen and we are grateful to sponsors and fundraisers who have provided the money.

Enjoy Nottingham night life - leave the car at home (5-10-09)

Nottingham night

How do you get to Nottingham in the evening? Well, up to a couple of months ago, you had to have car and be prepared to find a suitable car park and pay for the privilege.

Now, you don’t need a car. You can go into Nottingham in the evening by bus. What’s more you can come back home on the bus late into the night. That means you do not have to worry about parking and you can have a drink of beer if you wish because you are not driving. You can do this on every night of the week except Sunday.

For example, between 4pm and 8pm there are five buses heading into Nottingham city centre. To bring you home again, you can choose from up to eight buses and at the weekend you can leave as late as 1.20am in the morning.

Bingham Go to the Travel Page for full details of evening bus services to both Nottingham and Bingham.

Parish Councillor, John Greenwood, has worked hard to get this service established but there is just one cloud on the horizon: if the service gets little use, the contract for it will not be renewed next year and that will be the last we see of an evening bus service in Cropwell Bishop – possibly for ever.

All village surveys revealed that we wanted public transport to Nottingham (and Bingham and Cotgrave) in the evening: now we have, we must support it.
