Boxing Day match for Mick (21-10-10)

Pudding Match It's that time of year again to try and raise a competitive 11 to take on the mighty Cropwell United, in the annual Boxing Day football match. Following last year's postponement due to frost and snow, we are hoping for an Indian summer to ensure the annual contest goes ahead. The game will take place on the Sheldon Field, Cropwell Butler, with a kick of time off 11.00am. Thanks to the kind permission of Dave Shaw.

If you are interested in playing in the game for the Cropwell Barbarians, training/trials/run-a-round will take place each Sunday at Cropwell Bishop Memorial hall playing field, from Sunday 7th November at 11am until match day.

Please don't expect to play if you don't come to training.

Unless of course you are playing for another Sunday team or don't live locaI. We know people travel home for Christmas. We say training; it's just to make sure we have enough men and a kick about. For the 1st week at least.

Unfortunately, this year's game has added meaning. A few weeks ago, a great friend of all footballers in the area, Mick Jennings, sadly passed away. Mick was a very popular man and a decent referee who wouldn't stand for any back-chat but would let the game flow. He had taken charge of all the Cropwell/Inter Village Cup games and all of the recent Boxing Day matches. Mick will be missed by all of us who have ever played football locally.

It is with that in mind we want to try and raise a few quid for the Jennings families chosen charity, The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, on match day. (http://www.roycastle.org/ ). And maybe one day even play on Boxing Day for the Mick Jennings trophy.

We have decided that match tax for both teams and all used substitutes, will be donated to the chosen charity. Also, collection buckets will be on hand for supporters to give generously. There is always a good crowd; I am sure the year before last there were over 100 people there!! So please turn out to support the two teams and a good cause. Additionally, we will be looking to organise a raffle in the pub afterwards (venue to be decided). The important thing is to ensure the game takes place and we raise a few bob for a good charity, in recognition of a decent bloke.

Finally a plea, Is there anybody out there who could referee for us this year? The game is played in a good spirit but on the down side we want you to do it for free, so we make more for charity!

Regards

Mike (Jack) Campbell (Director of Football & PR) & Neil King (Manager/Tactician/Drinker) Any questions about getting in the team, training or the day itself, please call Neil on 0770 2213841 or neilking1@talktalk.net

Police to investigate Allotment thefts (19-10-10)

Allotment View It started with the theft of rhubarb, a marrow and now rows of carrots and potaoes. The monetary value of these vegetables is not great, but no allotment holder takes kindly to having the plants they have tended for five months snatched from their intended dinner plates.

Plot holders are now working together with the police to catch the thief. Extra security measures will soon be in place to make this task easier. Meanwhile, if anyone has information that can be of assistance, please contact PCSO John Heaps on 0300-300-99-99, extension 810-6711.

Thankyou

ATC make good use of Memorial Hall facilities (10-10-10)

ATC in Cropwell Bishop ATC in Cropwell Bishop ATC in Cropwell Bishop Having just the right facilities in the right place attracted a group of young people to our Memorial Hall this weekend.

Some 24 members of the local ATC were camped on the Memorial Hall field on Saturday night. The ATC is the RAF's cadet force and young people between the ages of 13 and 22 are given the opportunity to find out more about aviation in the Royal Air Force.

This ATC group is based at Nottingham Airport (Tollerton) but its members come from all over south Nottinghamshire.

A prime aim of the ATC is to encourage the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship: no doubt their weekend here helped.

On the Saturday they walked—or maybe we should say "marched"—all the way from Plungar to Cropwell Bishop, and then on Sunday they walked from Cropwell Bishop to Colston Bassett and then on to Hickling before turning around and returning to the Memorial Hall via the canal. No doubt they will remember what they were doing at 10.10am on 10-10-10 for a long time to come!

On completion of the 'Belvoir March', they were presented with a medal and certificate. However, I imagine the experience of the weekend will prove far more valuable.

The photos show them 'relaxing' on Saturday afternoon. Even after their walk from Plungar, they still have lots of energy. Meanwhile, helpers were in the kitchen preparing the evening meal.

A sell out for the first Quiz Night at Old School (10-10-10)

Quiz Night Quiz Night Over 60 people packed the Old School last night for the first Quiz Night to be held there—and there is little doubt that it will not be the last: it was a great success.

Ten teams of six battled for the trophy but after two hours of listening to music clips, working out answers, inspired guesswork and pure guesswork there could be only one winner.

However, when five teams earned exactly the same score it needed a tie-break to split them. How many years did Robinson Crusoe spend on his island? Since none of the team leaders knew the answer, it was down to yet more guesswork to find the champions. I think the photographs tell the full story.

Christmas Fair (8-10-10)

Xmas lights in Cropwell Bishop I know it is still a long way off, but you might like to make a note of two events planned by the Memorial Hall Committee.

On Saturday 4th December there will be a Christmas Fair at the Memorial Hall. It will be in the afternoon from 2pm to 6pm. Stalls are available and you can reserve one by contacting either Maureen Newbold (989-4137) or Pam Barlow (989-2361).

Also, on Sunday 19th December, Santa Claus will return for his annual tour of the village (weather permitting).

No evening bus service (8-10-10)

Just as we get news of an extra bus service (see below), we hear that the 53E evening bus service has been withdrawn. This means that there is now no bus service from Nottingham after 6.35pm.

Councillor John Greenwood will be providing more details of our local bus services on the 'Cropwell Bishop Parish Council website': there is a link to it on the right.

An early bus to Nottingham for just 50p! (5-10-10)

You know how it is with buses, you wait ages for one to arrive at your bus stop and then two arrive together. It feels like that with Cropwell Bishop buses.

Councillor John Greenwood has campaigned for ages for a better bus service to our village. He achieved that last year and ever since it feels like bus companies are falling over themselves to provide us with a winning service.

Eddie Ward alterted me to the latest one which comes from 'bargainbus'.

Click on the Travel page to find out more about this new service which looks especially attractive for workers and students.
