Lead roof stolen! (20-9-10)

Porch roof Many of you will be aware that several churches in the Vale have had lead stolen from their roof—and our own St Giles has not escaped the thieves. The Churchwarden emailed to tell me:

"We have had another lead theft from the porch roof of St Giles the other week (overnight on the 6-7th Sept we think).

It is such a shame. Whatever the value of the lead, the cost of making the roof good again will be much greater—especially since St Giles is a Grade 1 listed building.

In some ways it is an attack on our village heritage and, whatever anyone's religious views, this sort of theft and vandalism hurts us all.

Last time we had lead stolen in 2008, it cost over £3000 to repair and replace. Did any villagers see or hear anything? If you notice anything suspicious in the future please phone the Police on 999."

Whilst on the subject of St Giles Church, you may be interested to know that next Sunday (26th Sept) is designated "Back to Church" Sunday. The Churchwarden says:

"If there is anyone in Cropwell Bishop (or anywhere!) who feels they would like to come to a service at St Giles but, for whatever reason, has been unsure or unable or to do so, or has not been to church for a long time, then this day is for them.

The "Family" service at St Giles will be at 11.00 am and all will be made to feel most welcome—but will not be "fussed" over to the point of embarrassment!"

What is CKOB looking for? (13-9-10)

Our own village Youth Club, "Cropwell Kids of Bishop" (CKOB), has been a great success with our young people. The kids are enjoying a wide range of activities and also learning a lot too.

At the moment, the Club is in need of something. To find out what, click on the Youth Page.

Enjoy night out in Nottm with fast bus home. (9-9-10)

Ever needed to get home after a night out in Nottingham and unable to drive yourself home—for whatever reason?

Well now you can catch the bus and get home fast!

The new RED2 service has a bus leaving the Victoria Centre at 10.50pm that will get you to Cropwell Bishop by 11.35pm. It can also pick you up from Friar Lane or the Broadmarsh Bus Station. And it can do it on any day of the week except Sunday.

I have heard from people who have already made use of the Red2 during its first week and they have been impressed by the service: not having to go to Cropwell Butler makes the trip home much quicker. I understand that the bus driver was even offering free tickets to passengers last week.

£ Thousands go to charity (7-9-10)

Bike Ride 2009 picture Bike Ride 2009 picture Bike Ride 2009 picture Bike Ride 2009 picture Do you remember the Bike Ride in 2009? That was the big charity cycling event where teams of all abilities rode around a local circuit over 24 hours. To refresh your memory, you can click on the item "CB Bike Ride 2009" in the "Earlier News Stories" on the right.

Thanks to the massive effort of everyone involved—marshals, organizers, cooks, the cyclists themselves and everyone else who contributed to its success—two local organizations were given a wonderful financial boost.

The final amount of money collected—mostly from people who sponsored the riders—amounted to £5,838.66.

This money was divided between the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Trust and our own Memorial Hall.

The 2009 event was the sixth time that it has been held (it takes place every two years) and we can all feel proud of what has been achieved since it started.

In that time, over £40,000 has been raised and of that over £14,000 was passed to the Lincs & Notts Ambulance Trust and almost £6,000 went to Marie Curie Cancer Care—the charity supported during the first two events.

The Cropwell Bishop Bike Ride was the Brainchild of Colin and Deborah Bryan and they organized the first three events.

They then handed the reins to Stephen Newbold who, with the support of his family and the help of the Memorial Hall Committee, has ensured the continued success of this event.

The date of next year's Ride is soon to be fixed. If you would like to get involved with its planning and organization, email Stephen (Steven.Newbold@computerland.co.uk) or phone Pam Barlow (989-2361): your support can make next year's event even better.
