Sheds take a battering (7-12-13)

Several sheds suffered damage during the gales on Thursday 5th December. Even so, the vast majority of sheds, greenhouses, fences, etc show no effects of the strong winds.

Order your seeds (23-9-12)

Kings Seeds

Members of Cropwell Bishop Allotment Association, you can choose your seeds for next year from the 'Kings Seeds' catalogue without even leaving your computer.

Last year you were given a printed order booklet, but now you can download copies of all sections of the colour catalogue—and an order form—simply by clicking on the items you want.

On the right-hand side of this web page you will see a section headed 'Downloads' and below it a section headed, "Kings Seeds ....".

Double click items to download them. Then save their pdfs to your computer and browse through them at your leisure.

When filling in the order form, you must add £1 for 'individual packing' and also £1.50 for 'individual order'. You have to post the order form.

I have found that seeds from Kings are excellent value: the packets seem to contain far more seeds than most other suppliers. This year (2011) I was able to use the seeds left over from 2010 and they all came up.

Allotment Association AGM — 2013 (12-2-13)

Last night the Cropwell Bishop Allotment Association held its AGM at the Old School.

It makes change to see members without gardening boots on, a scarf around their neck and a spade in their hand—and in a warm environment.

Once annual subscriptions had been gathered in we had a short meeting to present the accounts (still healthy), hear about changes to Rule 17 regarding 'inspections and terminations', and discuss some points raised by members.

As a result, the Handbook has been updated to include the new version of Rule 17 and you can download a pdf copy by clicking on the link in the Downloads box on the right. Once downloaded, you may find it more convenient to then save the pdf to your computer and then browse through it using Adobe Reader.

It won't be long now before the Allotment Site is crowded with eager members setting seeds and plants in the warm Spring sunshine—the snow, frost and heavy rain being nothing more than a fading memory. But, in the meantime, I ought to warn you that snow is forecast for tomorrow!

Allotment Association's 2nd AGM (27-2-12)

Members gathered in the Old School this evening to take a brief look back at both the successes and upsets of the last year: they then looked forward to the challenges of this year.

It was proposed that we work with the village Gardening Club to put on another Horticultural Show on Saturday 8th September. This will be held in the Old School which, by then, should have been updated by the builders.

It was also suggested that the problem of rats invading the site needed to be looked at. The Committee will approach professional Pest Control Companies to see if they can offer a solution.

And that was about it, leaving everyone with plenty of time to go home and start planning their planting and sowing for the spring—which feels like it is approaching fast.

Food for love (11-6-11)

Wedding Wedding Cake

Allotment holders, Jon and Katy, got married at beautiful Langar Hall yesterday. Congratulations to both of them and may they have a long and happy life together.

I love their wonderful wedding cake. It portrays the ideal life: green fields, flowers, a stream, a pond and, naturally, an allotment.
