Gardening Club: Second Meeting (19-5-08)

Even more turned up to the second meeting of the Cropwell Bishop Gardening Club at the Memorial Hall. As people queued to pay their £10 annual subscription, it was evident that a lot of work had been done by Judy and Glyn (Club organisers) over the last month. Printed details of trips and visits planned for the next three months were available, gardening magazines were piled on a side table and the end long table was crammed with members' plants for sale at just 20p or so.

In no time at all, we were being treated to a demonstration of how to plant a hanging basket. Mary Ingram used to work at Hortors in Kinoulton and this was routine work to her. She managed to pack 10 plants into a basket that most onlookers would have probably fitted in 6 at most. The result was a basket that looked good the moment it was finished: in the coming months it will undoubtedly look magnificent. Thanks go to Hortors (in Kinoulton) who generously donated all the plants.

But who would take responisbility for looking after the flowers? The problem was solved with a raffle! The winner was Celia Giblenn. Our photo shows Mary passing on her creation for Celia to care for.

Some members are eager to have an allotment in the Village. They see thriving allotments in Cotgrave, Cropwell Butler, Keyworth and Radcliffe-on-Trent and want to enjoy similar facilities here in their own Village. They hear stories of allotments that once existed here and wonder why we no longer have them. Nine people have expressed a keen interest in having an allotment and are expected to make approaches to the Parish Council in the coming weeks.

The next meeting will be on: Monday 16th June at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along.
