Doctor Leadley's Garden (30-7-10)

Doctor Leadley's Garden Eighteen members of the gardening club paid a visit To Dr Martin Leadley's garden in Southwell yesterday.

Dr Leadley gave us a guided tour around his extensive garden, which was started in 1810 and features some fantastic mature trees that are thought to have been planted around that time.

He has made changes to the landscape since he move there 4 years ago, complementing the earlier plantings.

After the tour we enjoyed tea and cake and sat on the patio overlooking the superb garden.

Open gardens open eyes (19-7-10)

Open Gardens 19-7-10 Open Gardens 19-7-10 "I wonder what their back garden looks like."

Well members of the Gardening Club (and their guests) no longer have to wonder. Tonight was "Open Gardens" when nine members opened their garden to the rest of us.

This annual event is proving really popular. Those who open their gardens have to make a big effort to make their garden look its best but then they can sit back and enjoy it even more for the rest of the year.

At the same time, visitors are inspired to get their garden up to the same standard. On the other hand, they may decide to lock the gate to their back garden and vow never to let anyone ever see it again—especially members of the Gardening Club!

After the tour, everyone ended up at the Old School to enjoy cheese and wine in the School garden. It all made a pleasant change to pruning, spraying and weeding.

"Shabby Chic" (15-7-10)

Hazel Kayes garden Hazel Kayes garden Another balmy summer evening, another Gardening Club visit.

If I were writing for Homes & Gardens, "Shabby Chic" is how, I think, I would describe the style of this garden of Hazel Kayes.

Her Garden Centre at Rearsby is no more and the old sales beds of plants lie dry, overgrown and abandoned—but her beautiful gardens remain.

Created twenty years ago these wide flower-beds contain some really unusual and fascinating plants. Yes, the twitch and weeds grow among them but the quality of the plants and planting style shine through. You just wanted to keep looking and looking and each time you saw something new, unusual and interesting—and the heady smell of the honeysuckles and philadelphus was just wonderful.

Thank you for an insight into this very private garden world.

We can now look forward to Hazel's next visit to the Gardening Club in the Autumn when she will talk to us about creating water features in our gardens.
