Horticultural Show Grows Outwards (8-9-12)

Horticultural Show A Horticultural Show might be looked upon as a celebration of the 2012 growing season. What better way to celebrate in than in brilliant sunshine under blue skies at the bright and cheerful Old School.

It has been a difficult year for vegetable and flower growers: spells of cold, floods and then dry weather have ruined the plans of many Cropwell gardeners. Nevertheless, there were many example of vegetables and flowers to impress the visiting judges.

From 7.30am this morning, people were arriving with freshly picked crops, newly baked scones and much more. After 9am our four judges were viewing, examining, prodding and tasting exhibits and, as they picked their favorites, members of the Show Committee and helpers were busy noting results and writing certificates.

Horticultural Show At mid-day the door was opened to the general public and our volunteers in the kitchen swung into action to provide home baked scones, cakes and drinks.

At 2.30pm it was time to announce the winners of our two awards. The 'Best in Show' award was presented to Bob Walker. His ability to grow a wide range of both vegetables and flowers to a very high standard enabled him to amass a large number of points and he was a clear winner. Well done Bob.

Horticultural Show The 'Family Award' was contested by five families and is as hotly contested as the 'Best in Show' award. This clearly has to be a team effort and no doubt this sometimes demands extra parenting skills keeping all members on board!

Once again there was a clear winner: Sarah Gladman-Bell and daughter Harriet collected almost twice as many points as the next family. Well done Sarah and Harriet.

This year saw an increase in the number of entries in the Cookery section of the Show and also the Children's section. Are there other categories we could include in the Show (cross-stich, knitting, sewing, etc?) If we have 4 people entering a category, it would be worth introducing. Maybe we could move towards a more inclusive "Cropwell Bishop Show"? If you have any ideas for our next 'Cropwell Show', tell one of the Committee members.

Finally, from the Show Committee, a big thank you to everyone who helped make the Show a success: the 'helpers' yesterday and today, the adults and children who entered exhibits and the people who turned up to see the show and buy produce at the 'End of Show Auction'.
