Carols and Lights (21-12-14)

St Giles

The afternoon of Saturday 13th December saw over a hundred people mingling in St Giles Church, to see the newly rebuilt chancel arch wall.

They were treated to Christmas Carols and songs from both the Joint Churches Choir and the Cropwell Bishop Singers, while enjoying festive refreshments. St Giles St Giles

Elaine Robinson and Mel Stanley presented a cheque for the proceeds for the Great Cropwell Bishop Variety Matinee Show (see lower down this page).

Then everyone made their way outside, into the thankfully mild evening air for the countdown to the switching on of the new outdoor lights.

Finally it was back in to church to decorate the Christmas tree - especially enjoyed by our younger visitors.

We are so grateful to the very many people who have supported our Appeal through the year, during which time we have achieved so much in terms of fundraising and restoration. We forward to all that 2015 has in store, and to God’s continued blessings.

Santa in Cropwell Bishop (17-12-14)

Santa Seen around the Village on several occasions over the last few days. Here, he was captured by Mel Stanley.

I am sure that he will be back again on Christmas Eve but then he will be working so quickly there will be no chance of us getting a photo.

Boxing Day Walk (15-12-14)

Rainbow Sue Rickells captured this lovely picture of a rainbow this afternoon. In the background are the woods on Hoe Hill.

The rainbow clearly comes to an end just over that wall.

I can just picture Sue hopping over that wall to the pot of gold that must surely be there.

Is this the photo (below) she didn't show us?

Boxing Day Walk (14-12-14)

Boxing Day For Boxing Day I have, for several years, organised a Walk and this year is no different. People in the village who have ever been on one of the Cropwell Bishop Walks have already been informed of the arrangements but in fact everyone is welcome to join in. That includes friends and family who happen to be with you over Christmas.

We usually follow the same route each Boxing Day: only very wet conditions have forced a change. The plan is to walk over fields and paths to Colston Bassett, then in front of the Hall and on to the Old Church ruins before returning to Cropwell Bishop via a different route. It is about 5 miles in total.

If you would like to come along, send me an email—there is no committment, I just like to have an idea of how many people there coming.

We meet in the car park opposite the Wheatsheaf Pub and set off at 10.00am. We regularly stop to enable everyone to keep together and will be back home by noon.

Singing and Lights at St Giles (13-12-14)

St GilesSinging in a Church—nothing unusual about that surely?

And the photo below, mostly of a blank wall—no interesting features there.

The wall certainly is featureless and plain and that is the wonderful news!

St Giles Church has been out of action for a whole year and, until just a few days ago, there were still builders and scaffolding both inside and outside the 800 year old building.

Now, following the tremendous fund raising efforts of 2014, the building is open agaiin.

This afternoon, to celebrate, both the Church Choir and Cropwell Singers were there to make good use of the building's acoustic properties to entertain the many people who dropped in.

To finish off, Bronwen Gamble led the count-down to the switching on of the Christmas lights outside the entrance.

Perhaps a lesson to be learned from the news reports here on the website this afternoon, is that we should not take the old treasures of Cropwell Bishop for granted—whether they are made of stone or living beings.

Carola Jones (13-12-14)

Carola Jones Hundreds of friends and family of the late Carola Jones gathered at our Primary School this afternoon to celebrate her life.

In the photograph, her cousin Sophie recalls happier times as Carola's husband, Ian, looks on.

DVD of Variety Show (12-12-14)

Did you get to see the recent Variety Show in the Villlage? Or, maybe you wished you had? Either way, there is a way for you to enjoy all the great acts again—by watching a DVD of the Show.

I filmed the whole Show and have produced an edited version which lasts 90 minutes. Dozens have already been sold to the performers and now Elaine Robinson is making them available to everybody else.

She is selling them for £5 each and, in keeping with the aims of the Show, £4.50 of each sale will go towards the St Giles Building Restoration Fund.

To order your copy, email me or contact Elaine.

Don't "Stilt on" Cheese: the New Shop is now Open (2-12-14)

Cheese Shop For quite a time now we knew that it was coming and this morning it happened: the Creamery opened up its new shop.

First in were Bob and Mell Stanley. Sarah Gladman-Bell was there to welcome them and let them get a taste of what is on offer.

With Christmas just round the corner this must be a good time to attract new customers as they drive by. Unlike the previous shop, this one is in full view.

Will you be buying some Stilton for presents? And for yourself, of course.
