Community Event at Old School (2-6-15)

50+ Event At the Old School today, there was an event for villagers who are over 50 years old.
It was planned and organised by our Parish Council and arranged around the main hall were tables set up by a wide range of organisations.

The Village's own Gardening Club, Walking Group, WI and Allotment Association were all represented and there were also organisations who exist to offer guidance, help and products to make life easier for people as they get older. These were also of interest to people involved in the care for their older relatives.

Both the fire and police services were there and several stands were giving out leaflets and handy products. The fire service was giving out the most unusual item: look through the pictures and you will spot it clutched by some people. It looks rather intimidating until you are told its purpose: to reach and press the 'test button' on smoke alarms mounted on the ceiling!

50+ Event An organisation called 'MusicWorks' gave a fascinating presentation about the value of music to those with dementia. Not just any music, but the songs and tunes that each of us stores in our memories and associate with times and events in our lives. Those with dementia can still enjoy those distant memories even if they can't remember yesterday. The power of this kind of therapy was show in a short video. Photographic illustrations of people reflecting on their younger selves made a powerful point to everyone about the way we look upon older people.

50+ Event At noon, an excellent selection of tasty sandwiches were put out together with home made cakes. The sandwiches were paid for by Councillors Gordon Moore and Richard Butler and the cakes were provided by members of our WI. Helpers provided everyone with a constant supply of hot drinks throughout the morning.

All visitors were encouraged to contribute their thoughts on what is good about Cropwell Bishop by writing on labels and then pegging them onto a "washing line". All these ideas will be analysed with the aim of making our village even better.

It is recognised that many people over 50 are, of course, still working full-time and so unable to attend today's event. However, the majority of those giving advice and help could only attend during the working day. This is the first time a Community Event like this has been been put on in the Village.

If you want further information on any of the organisations that were at this event, you can get it through the organiser, Parish Clerk Janice Towndrow, at the Old School.

Superfast is Back (28-5-15)

Within 6 months of providing our Village with "Superfast Fibre Broadband", BT has had to increase the capacity of its cabinets. That work has now been completed and internet providers are now, once again, able to offer us connection speeds that allow live movie and iPlayer viewing over the internet.

Thank you to the several people who told me that companies are now accepting their orders for upgrades to this fast service.

NB
You may have noticed that updating of my website has been very limited over recent weeks. The reason is that the hard disk on my main computer suddenly failed.

It is the first time in 30 years that this has happened to me and the machine was only 2 years old. Thankfully, I had a back-up drive and have lost no files but I am currently using less powerful machines until my poorly computer returns home.

Village Lengthsman no longer in doubt (9-5-15)

Following our Chairman’s Annual Report where it was indicated that the Lengthsman Scheme was in some doubt, we are delighted to report that the Lengthsman Scheme in conjunction with Nottinghamshire County Council has been funded for a further year.

Thanks to Ray Kimpton our Lengthsman for his continued work on our parishes behalf and the continued support from our County Councillor Richard Butler.

Buses update—a little more hopeful? (7-5-15)

After receiving many adverse comments about the proposed changes to the Greens Bus service in Cropwell Bishop (see Travel Page for details), Trent Barton and the County Council have agreed to postpone registration of the changes for a month to allow further consideration of the points made.

They intend to come back with some modified proposals within the next week or two.  We will await these revised proposals before making any further comments.
Many thanks for the helpful comments made to date.  We will publish the revised proposals as soon as we receive them.

You are invited to an 800th Birthday Party (6-3-15)

St Giles Birthday

The beautiful Church of St Giles in Cropwell Bishop will be 800 years old this year. Built in the times of King John, Robin Hood and Magna Carta, it stands at the heart of the village as a place of worship and solace. Year after year, countless generations have gathered for regular services and to mark festivals, such as Christmas, Easter, Harvest and Remembrance, as well as the personal milestones of baptisms, weddings and funerals. The church has watched its rural community pass from medieval times, through changing periods of history, to our modern technological age. For 800 years the people of the village have cared for the church and we are proud to continue the task. In the past year we have raised over £50,000 for repairs following the near-collapse of an internal wall, which meant that the building had to be closed for worship for the first time in living memory.

What better reason for a party than an 800th birthday and the re-opening of our beloved church? The people of St Giles’ Church will be celebrating throughout the year with special services, competitions, a pop quiz, concerts, an exhibition and, of course, a birthday party. The events will be launched with a “Buy Your Birthday” morning at St Giles’ Church on Saturday 28th March from 10 am to 1 pm. Visitors will be able to see the recent repairs, buy a beautiful commemorative birthday card and record their own birthday on a chart of “Friends of St Giles”. The money raised will be put towards church improvements – we would like to install toilet and kitchen facilities under a raised bell-ringing floor in the tower.

Over the spring and summer, everyone will be invited to enter our birthday-related competitions. Winning photographs of the church will be printed in a calendar for 2016. Children will be asked to design an 800th birthday card. Finally, as Cropwell Bishop’s answer to the Great British Bake-Off, we will be inviting people to make and decorate a birthday cake for the church.

The competition photos and birthday cards will be displayed in church during the Cropwell Bishop Village Celebration Weekend of 3rd – 5th July. The weekend will start with a concert in St Giles’ Church at 7.30 pm on Friday 3rd July. On Sunday 5th July at 12 noon, our annual teddy-bear parachute jump from the church tower will be followed by a competition award ceremony and a party, at which we will share the birthday cakes from the competition! The final event of the weekend will be an open-air service at 4 pm on the Sunday.

To round off the celebrations, the Bishop of Sherwood will join us for a service of thanksgiving on Sunday 11th October at 11 am.

We would be delighted to welcome friends of the church, old and new, to join us for any or all of our celebrations. Look out for more details of the individual events as they draw nearer. Let’s make it a year to remember!
