Bike riders finish at top speed (17-5-09)

rider For six and a half hours the cycle teams pushed hard to complete as many laps as possible before the mid-day deadline. Their day began at 5.30am this morning. In past events, there have always been some teams who could not raise themselves at such an early hour. However, this year, every team had a rider on the road before 6am.

During those early hours it was quite cold but there was little wind and the rain held off. A few teams were lapping at around 20 mins whilst others were content to enjoy the scenery at a much slower pace.

Back at the Memorial Hall riders and followers were tucking into a fried breakfast and keeping an eye on their own team’s progress. Steve and Paul Newbold, with the help of Margaret Brentnall and others, kept track of each team and posted their progress on the giant whiteboard. It was clear that a handful of teams were eager to maximise their potential and there was little to choose between them until the final hour. At mid-day the gates would shut: any team riders on the circuit would not be counted. At 11.30am teams were assessing their chances of gaining one final lap before the gate shut; most called it a day, but some pushed for one more lap.

Meanwhile, in the Memorial Hall, people where munching food and supping drinks prepared by the girls in the kitchen, and others were buying up raffle tickets: the first prize (in case you didn't have one) was a bike! Others were milling around cheering on their own team as well as everybody else during the final minutes. Even the sudden downpour of rain during the last half hour did not dampen spirits.

Cropwell Bishop Bike Ride gets going (16-5-09)

Mem Hall Field

sponsors teams At 12 noon today, organiser Steve Newbold got this years Cropwell Bishop Bike Ride underway. Nineteen teams of riders are lapping a 7 mile circuit to see how many miles they can cover during 24 hours. They will stop before it gets dark and then start again at 5.30am on Sunday morning. All will finish at 12 noon on Sunday.

Some teams consist of regular racing cyclists who have taken part in past CB Bike Rides, some are made up of youngsters in the Guides or Scouts and some are friends who have got together to form an impromptu team. Teams can be of any size and every team appears to be different. Whilst some cyclists enjoy pushing themselves hard around the circuit, some children – accompanied by their parents – are very happy to get all the way round.

The strong wind and occasional rain today will make it hard work for all entrants. Over 80 people are marshalling the event. Many are people living in the village but some are past residents who are returning for the day to help out. Some marshals are riders taking part in he event: in between riding 7 mile laps, they are spending an hour or so at some road junction ensuring that other riders get safely round the circuit.

Cropwell Bishop Creamery is the main sponsor of the event but fourteen local businesses – many from the village – are helping out too. It is the cyclists themselves who will contribute a great deal of money. They have obtained personal sponsorship to complete the event.

The money raised should run into thousands of pounds. It will be divided between two good causes. One, the Cropwell Bishop Memorial Hall, will be only too happy to welcome you to future events. The other will be thrilled if you never need to use its facilities: it is the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Even so, everyone was thrilled to see the arrival of the Air Ambulance during the afternoon.

If you are out on Sunday morning, look our for the cyclists and give them a cheer. Enjoy these photos taken today.
