The Way Back

Bike Ride 2011 off to great start (11-6-11)

Bike Ride 2011 Bike Ride 2011 The first day of the 2011 Bike Ride took place today without a hitch as 15 teams of cyclists worked to clock laps of the 7 mile circuit on local roads. The event was opened by Rushcliffe Mayor, local councillor Gordan Moore, who dropped the flag at 10.00am.

Whilst some teams were keen to amass as many laps as possible, others were content to enjoy the challenge of getting round at a steady even pace. It was hard work for all of them at times. The strong westerly wind was wonderful when behind them but a curse when in their face.

All 80 riders were in good spirits and there was much banter throughout the day.

The gates were closed at 8.00pm and the last few minutes were made exciting when one team rider passed through with just seconds to spare.

Over 1500 miles were covered today — enough to easily reach Austria by road. By nightfall the tented village on the Memorial Hall field was a mini village. On Sunday it will be a live one from the early hours: the first riders set off at 5.00am!

All proceeds from the event will be shared between Linc's and Notts Air Ambulance and the Memorial Hall. Over 70 marshals and large numbers of village people work behind the scene to make this event a success.

No litter in our village! (5-6-11)

Litter pick Litter pick 'Best Kept' villages don't just happen, they have to be worked at. And that is what a crowd of Cropwell Bishopers (is that the right word?) were doing this morning.

Young and old were working together and little escaped their eagle eyes or brush and dustpans.

Refreshments afterwards at the Old School were well deserved.

Annual Parish Meeting (31-5-11)

Parish AGM 2011 This evening, the Parish Council held its Annual Meeting at the Old School. The meeting enables the Council to answer any questions from villagers and is also an opportunity to provide imformation.

Usually it invites an outside speaker and this evening we were treated to an enjoyable presentation by Pam Hobson of Balfour Beatty.

Pam is the Public Liaison Manager for the A46 Road Project and was able describe in detail the 'why and how' of bulding the road—particularly the stretch near Cropwell Bishop. Did you know bodies—at least 2000 years old—together with pottery and a circular sturcture—were discovered just outside our village? Could they be ancestors of someone living in Cropwell Bishop today?

Parish AGM 2011 She had many overhead photos of the road during its construction and also revealed the effort that goes into protecting wildlife during its construction. The company even used hawks to scare away birds from trees that they would be felling. This resulted in the birds nesting in trees that would not be felled.

And they constructed artificial 'hedges' so that bats would be able to navigate their way home even after the original hedges had been destroyed. I won't go into the newts and badgers!

Pam confirmed that the road will have an official opening—but, so far, no one has been earmarked for the task. Wonder if William and Kate are busy that weekend?

Lots to talk about at Sat Cafe (28-5-11)

There is always something happening at the Saturday Cafe at the Old School. Once you are there, time flies by.

Almost as soon as you have sat down, someone is sitting next to you, your order for tea and cake is taken and you are away. It is certainly the place to find out what is going off in the village and you are sure to see someone you have spoken to for ages.

Oh, and there is always something to buy and take home with you. Some people still haven't got round to visiting the Saturday Cafe yet—can you believe it?
