Boxing Day in Cropwell Bishop (26-12-09)

Boxing Day Walk Where do you think the Cropwell Bishop Walking Group went today?

Thirty people braved the extremely icy paths and roads to trek across our local footpaths and rights-of-way in brilliant sunshine.

Once back in the Village they went to the Old School where Hilary had prepared a feast of roast pork and sausages (all from Barlows of course) on cobs, alongside a selection of chutneys provided by Barbara Pugh.

By the time they had finished off with mince pies and stolen cake, and supped their mulled wine, most tummies were full - and those that weren't, went back for more.

And where did they go? Click on the 'Walks Page' and find out through forty pictures.

Cropwell Music is very much ALIVE! (5-12-09)

Stormy Weather Boys Dancer Kate Alex Joe and Kate All together Over 60 people packed the Old School tonight to enjoy the first ever ‘Music Live’ event there.

Kate Hendry and others planned the event in just a few short weeks and, whilst some might have became a little anxious as the date approached, Kate maintained her calm enthusiasm and certainty that everything would be alright on the night. And indeed it most certainly was.

The new stage was brought into action again and the plush seats scattered the main hall. There was ample room to stretch out your legs comfortably and still be able to amble to the bar for drinks and nibbles whenever the fancy took you.

But people had come to hear music and none can have been disappointed with the show. The acoustics of the hall turned out to be really good. Singers and instruments were clear and there was none of the hollow echo that you get in some village halls. No doubt the new flooring, cushioned chairs and window-blinds help there.

First on stage were the Stormy Weather Boys who are clearly very experienced – they sang and played extremely well and soon had the audience singing along with them.

Next up were Ray and his son – who live here in Cropwell Bishop. Both are highly skilled guitarists and played and sang a range of songs including hits by Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Eve Cassidy. It was clear that this night every taste would be catered for. The atmosphere was enhanced further by a couple of dancers!

Then Kate herself stepped on stage, first with her violin, then her viola and finally her electric violin: plenty of variety there! She was joined on stage by several other players as they played a collection of pieces.

There was yet more variety when Alex (also from the Village) skilfully entertained us with music on his keyboard and then on his saxophone. He played both classical music and popular tunes - and then had the audience singing along to one the songs from Les Miserables.

Once again there was a change of style as Joe played his melodeon alongside Kate on her violin. It made you feel like you were enjoying a summer’s evening in Paris!

Then most of the musicians filled the stage and we even heard an Italian guitar (brought along by John) being played.

Everyone was grateful for the effort put in by the musicians, organisers and people working on the door and behind the bar. This new venture by the Old School was a great success and many people will be hoping that it is soon repeated.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Music Live event: keep an eye on this website for details. Here are a few photos from the evening.
