Coffee morning at the Old School (27-6-09)

bicycle

Coffee and cakes down at the Old School (on the last Saturday of every month) has now become a regular feature of village life. At 10.30am this morning it was difficult to find a place to sit but the super fast waitress service ensured that no one was left standing for long. Cake, for just 50p, tasted like it had been baked that very morning.

The theme for this morning’s event was ‘fire safety’ and two members of the fire service were on hand to give both advice and a range of ‘goodies’, including low-energy light bulbs. At the other end of the hall, high quality birthday (and many other) cards were on sale at prices lower than can be found in most shops.

On leaving the building, people may have looked over at the grassy area and noticed the new seat provided by Notts County Council - a prize for our 'Building Better Communities' award.

I wonder what the next coffee morning has in store for us? coffee drinking fire advice card sales new seats

St Giles Church – for worship and ……. what? (27-6-09)

10 Year Plan This morning people were invited to enter the church and talk about its next 10 years of life. St Giles church is a community building and for most of its 800 years it was the only community building in the village.

There is hope that it can once more serve the interests of a majority of people in the community. Steve Gelsthorpe, Jane Travis and Rector, Bronwen Gamble, are eager to discover the views of villagers – what would you like to seen happen to the inside of the building; what would encourage you use it?

Someone said the high ceiling made it the best village space for playing badminton! Whilst this may be seen as a step too far, there is certainly a desire for fresh thinking about the building that everyone associates with Cropwell Bishop. For more on this topic, see the letter posted on this news page on 3rd June.

Cropwell Bishop today (24-6-09)

Pinfold Old Grain Store

It is a beautiful summer's day in Cropwell Bishop and a chance to look at our surroundings with a sharper eye. The picture of the Pinfold shows how well the plants put in by members of the Gardening Club are coming on. The cottages beyond fit in perfectly with the relaxing scene. Many will remember the building being used by the grain merchant, Simpson, not so many years ago.

Cropwell Cinema a sell out (19-6-09)

Waiting for the start clip from the film

All the seats were filled at the showing of 'Gran Torino' at the Old School on Friday evening. People were able to enjoy a drink both before the start of the film and during the short interval halfway through. This enabled people to talk with those around them and added to the experience.

Interval Chatting

If you want to see the next film you will have to act quickly. As soon as you see adverts, dash down to the Cabin to get your tickets. If you are too late you could try and get in by offering to sell ice creams at the interval!

St Giles Church - an open letter (3-6-09)

St Giles Plan Dear All
St Giles Church has stood at the heart of our village for over 800 years and is very likely to remain there for the next 800 as well!
With that in mind the Rector and the Parochial Church Council (PCC) are very keen to establish the views of the village as a whole as to what it wants from this beautiful building.
At the moment, and thanks to the efforts of the Parish Council, the Village Plan, the restoration of the Old School as well as the establishment of hobby and interest groups such as the Village Choir and the Gardening Club, there is a freshness and feeling of vitality within Cropwell Bishop.
St Giles wants to play its part in all that as well and that is why we want to hear the views of organisations and individuals and listen to their concerns about our Church – the building, the grounds and what St Giles can offer the community.
To this end the PCC is holding an open meeting at the Church on Saturday 27 June at 11.00am, so that people can come along to either express their views or simply to listen to what is being said. The meeting is scheduled to finish by 1.00pm, the results of the discussions being displayed in St Giles over the Village weekend, 4-6 July.
We would therefore like to invite everyone to come along and have their say. Whilst we are more than happy to see people turn up on the day it would help, so that we can plan for things like refreshments, if you would let one of us know so that we can plan for refreshments and the like.

Jane Travis 0115 9895577 email tim@tactex.co.uk
Steve Gelsthorpe 0115 9894712 email steve.gelsthorpe@cartwrightking.co.uk

Finally, please do not see this as an attempt by the Church to ‘increase numbers’ or having any missionary purpose; it is an initiative designed to make the Church and building more relevant to the needs of the village and its residents, as we face the challenges of the 21st century.
Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Best wishes
Steve Gelsthorpe & Jane Travis (on behalf of St Giles PCC)
