Under the new A46 and along the old one (28-10-12)

Walk 28-10-12 Eager to make the most of the "extra hour" gained last night, 26 of us, plus dogs, set out to explore some of the changes made to the canal and old A46 this year.

Striding out, unhindered by stiles and gates, we walked along the canal and then under the two canal bridges, just 20m apart but separated by 215 years.

Then it was back via the Stragglethorpe Road and along the old Fosse Road to Cropwell Butler. It felt strange to wander along the Roman Road that, until just a couple of years ago, carried so much heavy traffic but now is almost deserted.

As always, there was time to catch up with what is happening in the village: did you know ...... maybe another time!

Gold Medal Day for Walkers (29-7-12)

Walk 29-7-12 Glorious sunshine doesn't put off members of the Walking Club from hitting the footpaths—they are a tough lot!

In just 100 minutes this morning, they crossed fields of wheat and even the odd mouse to enter Cropwell Butler by a 'back route'.

Across fields, along bridle paths and even through someone's back garden (which has a right of way through it—although the astonished owner seemed to have forgotten the fact) we came back home via Hoe Hill.

A great morning of exercise: everyone deserved a gold medal.

Spring feet around Colston Bassett (25-3-12)

Losing an hour of sleep might put off some people from going on a 6 mile walk—but not twenty-one members of Cropwell Bishop Walking Club this morning!

Starting out with little bit of mist and slight chill in the air, seemed to encourage the leading group to stride out along Pasture Lane as we headed for Colston Bassett. It was not long though before fleeces and tops were being pulled off as the pace dropped and temperatures rose. And what a beautiful sunny morning it turned out to be. At least one person had applied sun cream beforehand and by mid-day it seemed a sensible precaution.

We are fortunate to have so many footpaths to choose from around Cropwell Bishop. Without even getting in your car, you can get your daily exercise and relaxation at no cost: give it a try sometime.

Boxing Day Get Together (27-12-11)

This is the forth Boxing Day Walk—doesn't time fly!

Unlike previous Walks which were cold, icy or white, this year the weather was mild and, at times, we were able to bask in warm sunshine. Over 50 people enjoyed the event.

At the end of the 5 mile trek we were ready to discard our muddy boots and enter the Old School where a small feast was awaiting us. It's not magic: Hilary, Natalie and Sue had been slaving away in the kitchen and lugging tables and chairs into position in time for the 11.30am return.

Their efforts were very much appreciated. Cobs with Barlows pork and Barlows sausages plus sauces donated by Barbara Pugh ("Barbara's Preserves" will be at next month' Saturday Cafe) soon filled empty tummies. Mince pies and cakes followed for those with space. Warm mulled-wine (alcohol free) completed the feast.

Why can't every Walk end like this? Ask Hilary, Natalie and Sue (actually, better not ask!).

We have seen it! (23-10-11)

Walk 23-10-11 Eighteen walkers assembled outside the Wheatsheaf at 10 o'clock this morning. We were eager to set off on our assent of the highest hill in Cropwell Bishop — Cropwell Wolds.

We crossed the lowlands on the south side of our village until we reached the Colston Bassett road and then headed westwards, straight past the Lime Kiln Pub and directly up the steep North Eastern face of the hill. Over bare ground and facing a fresh air-flow we pushed on to the summit.

Walk 23-10-11 Only then did we stop and gaze into the gorge in front of us and there it was, the thing we had been searching for. Down below, at the bottom of the deep hollow, creeping along, dark blue with white markings: the new A46 road!

Walk 23-10-11 And it was nothing like the monster some people feared it would be. Traffic was moving freely and road noise was virtually non-existent. This monster is friendly and will not harm our village.

We were in high spirits for the second half of our journey. Not surprising really—it was all downhill! Also, the sun was breaking through and we were getting warmer.

By mid-day we were back at base camp, Cropwell Bishop. There were no medals—just the satisfaction of a pleasant Sunday morning walk.

On the Owthorpe trail (19-8-11)

Twenty-three people joined the walk to Owthorpe last Sunday. The sun shone and jumpers were cast aside as we walked and talked along easy paths and across open fields south of our village. What a great way to spend a couple of hours!
