Colston Bassett Delights (29-8-10)

Walking Club 29-8-10 The Cropwell Bishop Walking Club were out again this morning.

Typically, being Bank Holiday Sunday many members had arranged other activities or were still away on holiday so could not make it. Typically, being Bank Holiday Sunday, it rained.

However, this was no problem for our walkers and their furry friends. In their waterproof gear they enjoyed the opportunity to explore the delights of Colston Bassett and were still back home for dinner.

Hot views of Cropwell Butler (27-6-10)

Walk 27-6-2010 Walk 27-6-2010 Walk 27-6-2010 Walk 27-6-2010 I know the Walking Club almost always has great weather for its outings, but when it was forecast that today was likely to be the hottest of the year, we decided it would be better to complete our walk before the sun became too hot: so we all jogged around. Just joking: it was far too warm for that!

Sixteen of us met up at the Wheatsheaf and at 10am we set off up Fern Road and then headed East behind the Primary School. The two horses in the first field were a bit too friendly but, fortunately, we had 'horse whisperer' Bill with us.

It is a nice feeling to walk through the narrow alleyway created by farmers with fields of wheat. As we headed towards the Butler-Tythby road, we passed through fields of waist-high wild flowers too.

On our approach to Cropwell Butler, via a secret back route, we came across the field of giant daisies we first encountered last year. Apparently they are grown for their seeds which will be harvested later in the year.

At Sheldon Field in Cropwell Butler, we came across the Cropwell United football team going through their pre-season training. It only seams a few weeks ago that they were playing last season's games.

We worked our way around Cropwell Butler via hidden pathways between back gardens and fields—all very enjoyable. We were back in Cropwell Bishop before the mid-day sun and with plenty of time to spare before the Germany match with England.

OK, since I am writing this after the game, the word 'match' is inappropritate: maybe I should say 'the Germany walkover of England'.

No more jokes about the England football team—only the players can afford to laugh as they count their earnings from their time in South Africa (I think the word 'earnings' is inappropriate too!).

High views and A46 progress (16-5-10)

Walk 16-5-10 Walk 16-5-10 Today it was one of those days when you feel sure that you must wear a jacket for the walk because it may turn cold and could even rain later on, but you end up sweating in warm sunshine carrying your cumbesrsome outer clothes.

It is quite a walk up to Cropwell Wolds Farm but on a clear day like today it is well worth the effort.

At the top we were able to look down into the deep cutting that will soon be the route for the new A46. We could also see the bridge that was lifted into place just yesterday at the Owethorpe junction.

On our return downward trek we could see for miles and miles: Bottesford Church could be easily picked out. With the help of binoculars, some could even see Lincoln Cathedral!

What a wonderful start to a lovely day.
