Taylors Wolds and Fox Holes (24-5-09)

start time for a chat country park The walking club planned their walk for today and that usually means one thing: beautiful weather – and so it was.

Starting half an hour earlier than normal, the 22 people (and several dogs) knew that this would be a long one. Walking steadily with ample time to chat and enjoy the views, we covered 6 miles during the next 3 hours.

Leaving the village via Richards Close, we stretched out along the field paths up to the Lime Kiln. Then westwards up to Groundwells Farm and then up through fields to Cropwell Wolds Farm.
The building of the new A46 gave us the opportunity to walk along its track to the normally isolated right-of-way to Taylors Wolds, Fox Holes and then down into Owthorpe.
A secret pond at Fox Holes (how does a pond form at the top of a hill?) followed by well kept stiles (although a little overgrown) and fantastic views across the Vale of Belvoir lifted our spirits high and not even inquisitive and lively bullocks could dampen them.

In Owthorpe we located the site of the old moat (wonder if anyone can claim on their expenses to have it cleaned out!!). We explored the churchyard and then headed to the canal towpath for a mile of easy level walking: hills would not have been welcomed at this stage.
We then took the shortest route to Cropwell Bishop across fields of bright yellow rape-seed and then buttercups.

We are lucky to have such lovely walks on our doorstep. If you want to join us next time, send me an email (details in panel on right).
